The male Bwadi bwa kifebwe society of men among the Songye and neighboring Luba peoples helped leaders exercise political and economic power. It employed a dramatic mask called kifwebe whose linear patterns are said to allude to history, power, and other esoteric meanings. The incised and whitened striations on this aggressive male mask enhance its sculptural power. The mask was one of the most powerful instruments of the society and performed in ceremonies to preserve the power of chiefs, to judge and punish wrongdoers, and to maintain order. This type of mask is among the best known works by African artists. This is a vintage art item and show signs of wear .
